U. S. Consultant in Poetry, 1976-1978
Robert Hayden werd geboren in Detroit, Michigan, in 1913. Hij publiceerde negen dichtbundels, waaronder Heart-Shape in the Dust (1940); A Ballad of Remembrance (1962), winnaar van een grote prijs op het eerste Wereldfestival van Negro Arts in 1966; en Selected Poems (1966). In 1975 kreeg hij de Academy of American Poets fellowship. Hayden werd in 1976 als eerste Afro-Amerikaan benoemd tot Poëzieadviseur bij de Library of Congress.
